Structure of the Intellect

SOI stands for Structure of the Intellect which is the name given to a theory of intelligence developed by the American Psychologist J.P. Guilford. In this theory intelligence is seen as a complex system of interrelated intellectual (cognitive) functions or abilties.

Theory of Multiple Intelligences

The structure of intellect model is not hierarchical in nature. Instead it classifies intellectual abilities into a cross-classification of the abilities. As the cube below illustrates. One way of classification is in terms of the mental OPERATION involved in the abilities. Each ability involves simply:

  • cognition (knowing)
  • memory
  • divergent productions (generation)
  • convergent productions
  • evaluation (judging goodness of what is known or produced)
